Iona's Machado Draws Jason Kidd Comparison From Teammate

Nov 24, 2011 2:28 AM

Iona senior Scott Machado had a career high 33 points and 10 assists in Iona’s 104-99 double-overtime win over Saint Joseph’s.

Machado is averaging 19.8 points and 12.8 assists per game during the first four games of the 11-12 season. Machado averaged 13.1 points and 7.6 assists per game last season.

“He’s the next Jason Kidd,” said teammate Mike Glover to the New York Daily News. Glover had 34 points in the game.

Machado has a double-double in each of Iona’s first four games.

“I think whenever you have a point guard like Machado you can do an awful lot of things,” said Saint Joseph’s head coach Phil Martelli. “I wouldn’t have bet you he could go 4-for-6 from three, but that kind of senior point guard play can pay significant dividends for their team.”

Machado had had a hand in 55.7% of Iona’s total buckets this season, whether as the scorer or assist man.

Machado, Glover Combine For 67 Points In Iona's Big Win Over St. Joe's

Nov 24, 2011 1:53 AM

Iona continued to prove its mettle, beating Saint Joseph's by a final score of 104-99 in double-overtime on Wednesday.

Scott Machado had 33 points and Mike Glover had 34 points and 15 rebounds.

“That was huge for us,” said head coach Tim Cluess. “That was a heckuva team out there tonight. Look at their resume and who they’ve beaten. They’re bigger than us, longer than us and as athletic as can be. They made shots all over the court. They got us down 13 to start the game and we could have easily folded but our guys fought back.”

Iona is now 3-1 on the season, with their only loss coming against Purdue.

“Mike Glover was the Mike Glover of old and it was good to see,” Cluess said. “Scott was phenomenal and Kyle Smyth (15 points), I thought was great. And other guys pitched in here and there. You’re never out of the game with the guys we have.”
